Positive Deviation has been a way of helping developing countries operate from the positives within their communities. It’s about looking at a group or community under pressure and feeding and developing the positive deviation which is helping them to survive and do well. It has had considerable success. It is also a way of getting a better focus in schools because it’s to do with working from within the school community and strengthening what is already there. With regard to Restorative Justice it sits well since restorative justice practices look at what went wrong, engages all those involved in the negative behaviour and looks to find a positive way out of it which supports the strengths of the group/community. The Texas Leadership Initiatives in Schools has looked at ways of increasing and encouraging positive deviation in schools based on a core competency approach:
- Action Learning: Real time problem resolution
- Systems Thinking: Navigating complexity
- Reflexive Practice: Living with complexity, relationships and strange loops
- Strategic Practice: Corporate culture and organizational change
Built into the programme is reflection which is so essential for achieving results in individual organisations.
